Hey! I haven't been here in a while, but, while I was gone, on April 12, a friend and I went to see the national RENT tour!
It was amazing! The cast was incredible. I've seen it several times, but, that cast gets a double thumbs-up from me and five roses! Razz
Discuss RENT in here! Very Happy

I'm not sure this is even on the UK at the moment...

I must see the film though. It has Idina Menzel in it doesn't it?

I rented the Rent on DVD Laughing and watched it last night. I'm so impressed by it. It took a little while to get into though. I found the score a bit patchy really, some songs were great others a bit dull (I'd give examples but i can't remember any names!). Idina Menzel was fantastic-even if i did keep thinking "Its Elphie!"

It made me cry quite a bit at the the end though Crying or Very sad

I really wish it was on in the West End, but I'll certainly be buying the DVD.

Oh, I love it. My favorite songs are:
-Seasons of Love A+B
-Today 4 U
-Out Tonight/Another Day
-I'll Cover You +Reprise
-Over the Moon
-La Vie Boheme A+B
-Take Me or Leave Me
-Without You
-Finale A+B

If you ever come to NYC, it plays constantly at the Nederlander. They made the theatre look like a bar or club and Rent is the only thing playing there.
Like at the Venetian, POTO is the only thing playing there forever.

I think Seasons of Love and La Vie Boheme were my favourites. I already loved Seasons of Love though.

The characters of Mimi and Maureen would be so much fun to play-although they were both played wonderfully in the movie.

Oh, boy. A lot different. First of all, the ENTIRE thing is singing. It's a rock opera. Every line is sung, though the ones that would usually be spoken are sung quieter, like normal talking.
Also, whereas the film takes place over a year and shows bits and pieces throughout, the stage version has the majority taking place over one day and night: the beginning, Mimi and Roger meeting, Angel's appearance, Maureen's performance, La Vie Boheme, and the rehab sequence. It gets confusing, too, with so much going on. The year unfolds in Act II.
There are other differences:
-The show begins with RENT!, not Seasons of Love. Seasons of Love opens up Act II, and Seasons of Love B takes place in the middle of Act II.
-Angel comes into the scene before Benny gets there, and sings along in You'll See.
-There is no dream sequence in The Tango: Maureen. Mark and Joanne simply dance and sing with no pauses.
-Life Support leads directly into Out Tonight/Another Day. The music for Out Tonight begins the exact moment Life Support ends. Mimi is already waiting, standing on the on-stage balcony. When the music begins, she explodes with song and dance.
-In Out Tonight, Mimi is at her apartment, not The Cat Scratch Club. The club is never seen in the play.
-One of my biggest annoyances, that means very little to most people, is the robe in Out Tonight. In the film, she rips is off before she says the line. In the play, she goes "I wanna put on a tight skirt, and flirt *rips it off* with a stranger!"
-In Another Day, Mimi does not leave Roger's loft, but stays there on the table, singing to him. Those at Life Support stand from their balcony and sing simultaneously to Roger and Mimi.
-I'll Cover You takes place the same night as the other stuff, and Angel is still in Santa drag.
-There is a song and scene not included in the film at all: Christmas Bells. In it, Angel, Collins, Mark, and Roger attend a bazaar or sorts, and meet Mimi there. Collins finds his coat that was stolen and Angel buys it for him. Then, Maureen drives in and her performance begins.
-La Vie Boheme A+B are much more vibrant and explosive, and more sexual.
-After I Should Tell You, Mimi and Roger leave the party.
-Maureen and Joanne break up and reuinte several times, but, when they sing Take Me or Leave Me, they are rehearsing for a new performance and arguing, not having an engagement party.
-There are two songs left out, again: Happy New Year A+B. In them, the friends attempt to break into their locked loft and apartments, and voice their resolutions. Benny appears and gives them the keys, and apologizes. The friends leave, all but Mimi, who, despite her resolution, buys crack from a man.
-Without You takes place on three tables, with the main characters rotating around them. Angel and Collins are on one, Maureen and Joanne are on another, fighting or making up, and Mimi and Roger are on the other.
-Angel does not die in WIthout You. There is another deleted song: Contact. In it, the friends are all under a sheet on a table, apparently having sex. Angel pops up and does a sort of masturbation sequence, vocalizing strangely, and suddenly, drops down and is dead.
-Goodbye Love and Halloween are more drawn out, with the preist saying that, if they can't pay for the funeral, the cemetery is no place for 'queers'.
That's it for now... I think. I have two Rent bootlegs, if you want?
--One is a normal touring production version
--The other has the original Broadway Cast, and therefore the same Maureen, Mark, Roger, Angel, Benny, and Collins as in the film. It is great quality!

Alrighty. The Mimi is Daphne Rubin-Vega [the OBC Mimi] and the Joanne is Freddi Walker [OBC Joanne]. The film cast was all the OBC members except for Joanne and Mimi.
--
More differences:
-Alexi Darling is only seen as a 'phantom'. She leaves messages on Mark and Roger's answering machine, and they never actually go to her office.
-Mark accepts the cameraman job offstage somehow. The audience never seems him accept. He just hints at it.
-Joanne does not help Mark as much as in the film.
--

I'm really not a fan of Daphne Rubin-Vega, I much prefer Rosario Dawson in the role of Mimi. I don't particularly like Daphne's voice.
Although she is much better suited to Mimi than Fantine in Les Mis (don't get me started on that one...)

(that was my very best attempt not to be cruel Embarassed )

The creator of RENT ssaid that Daphne was 'the real thing.' He found her. She was performing in a Latino comedy group called El Bano USA, and he pulled her into the studio to audition.
I personally love her. Her voice has gotten more gravelly recently, but, in the original OBC album, I adore her. Her and Antonique Smith are my two favorites.
Rosario Dawson is very good, and I love her in the film. It's just that Daphne and all of the OBC members created the roles for me, and I adore them.
I've heard others with your opinion, though. It's like me not thinking Gerard Butler it attractive.

I don't think her acting is bad in Rent though I suppose.

So, just to check, how many of them have AIDS, I get the feeling its all but one (the blonde one, Mark is it?) but it doesn't seem very clear.

Ugh, ANOTHER difference from stage to film.
-In the film, only Angel, Collins, Mimi, and Roger have HIV or AIDS. In the movie, to make it less coincidental, the beeper is Rogerrs, but Mimi thinks its hers.
-In the musical, Mimi, Collins, Angel, Roger, Maureen, and Joanne have AIDS or HIV. All but Mark and Benny, because he never had unprotected sex with Mimi. It is made clear in La Vie Boheme, when the beepers go off, and everyone but Mark takes a pill.

That strikes me as quite a major difference! Isn't HIV/AIDS more or less the central theme? Neutral

I love Today 4 U! It's so... boomy. The original broadway cast version is much more of a pop-song and Angel's voice has an incredible twang at the end of each 'you'.
