I've recently watched a POTO bootleg, and then the film to see which I preferred, and, during this, I realized for the first time that Madame Giry is terribly different in the novel, film, and musical.
-Novel: She's a small, small part that only explains Erik's existence
-Musical: She's a rather loud, brash woman. Like when she asks Meg to leave Christine's dressing room after AOM, or when she slams her stick, or insults the chorus/dancing girls.
-Film: She is more of a lovable motherly figure.
I prefer the musical version's portrayal. She's mysterious and motherly and nice and cruel, all at the same time. It's perfect.

I agree. I've always like the Madame Giry from the musical that can be both forceful and motherly. It's like she's bipolar!
See:
Mme Giry: [To Christine] You did very well, my dear. He is pleased with you.
[To Chorus and Dancers] And you! YOU were a disgrace!
It's scary!

Yes, I prefer Mme Giry in the musical. Heather Jackson who is playing it now in London is perfect. She can be so strict but she is so nice to Christine in, for example, the Don Juan rehearsal. Theres also a nice vulnerable side to her charcter in the musical (or at least how Heather plays it anyway) when they're all accusing her of being the Phantom's accomplice.

My favorite Madame Giry is from the US Tour I saw last year... I'll have to get to brochure to find her name.
