~Sweeney Todd Trailer

Tim Burton is remaking the old musical Sweeney Todd:The demon barber of fleet street. The musical which I have seen, was beautiful even with all the neck slitting and the cannibalistic elements which makes this play/musical pretty ghastly. It is a must see. I even recommend it (dare I say it!) over phantom of the opera that came out with Emmy and Butler. If you wish to know more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweeny_Todd though for in depth movie info try this link.. Just note both websites are spoilers for the movie coming out this X-mas. Johnny Depp is Sweeney Todd/ Ben barker Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovette, Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin, Sacha Baron Cohen as Signor Adolfo Pirelli, Laura Michelle Kelly as The Beggar Woman, and Timothy Spall as Beadle Bamford. If I forget any thing please share with the others just remember to put up a spoiler warnings.

I was going to post this today, too!
I can not WAIT for the movie, though I like the OBC and Broadway revival casts better:

OBC-Angela Lansbury (Mrs Lovett)
Len Cariou (Sweeney Todd/Benjamin Barker)

Revival: Patti LePone (Mrs Lovett)
George Hearn (Sweeney Todd/Benjamin Barker)

The Tim Burton film makes it much more Victorian and Gothic, which I like a LOT. Plus, with the casting and directing, you can't go wrong!
And, it comes out on December 21st, though the ads all say Christmas...

I'm very excited for this movie! I had no idea Depp could sing. Well, as I saw in a behind the scenes clip, he didn't know he could sing! And I'm always so behind...I'd never even heard of Sweeney Todd until I saw previews for the movie... Embarassed

I would like to see the new movie also. I didn't even know who Sweeney Todd was. I had seen the name in a lot of places, but didn't really try to find out who he was until I first saw the trailer for the upcoming movie. I googled him and read the synopsis on Wikipedia. I was instantly interested.
I then checked the musical out on Youtube and I watched both the concert version and OBC version with Hearn and Lansbury. I fell in love, a strange love, with Sweeney Todd.
I've heard clips of the actors in the new movie and I'm not impressed, but I can stand it. It's okay singing, but I still want to see it. I heard that the acting makes up for the singing. I'm really excited.

you and I both.I want tosee this new representation of sweeney todd.See how far awayit is fromthe musical.Though every time I think of the musical I think of erik. Why is that?I have no clue except that Sweeney and Erik almost run hand in hand. Not litterally of course but figurtivly speaking. * now thinking of sweeney and Erik skipping around hand in hand.* Shocked God my mind is weird.

I think the film version singing is very good. They are not singers acting, like most musicals, but actors singing. And everyone does their own, which makes it even harder!
I am counting down the days to this!

I think it comes out here on the 25th. I can't wait!

From what I've seen, I don't like many of the actors vocally but I think the acting and direction will make me forget about that.

Its one of the best musicals ever written, I just hope the film doesn't ruin it for me...

The actors make the film for me!
Helena said in an interview that she has dreamed of being Lovett since she was 11!
And her voice in Corpse Bride is aawesome!

Well it came out in the UK today and I saw it this afternoon.

I thought it was fantastic! It was so well filmed and edited. The singing from a lot of the actors was not as good as I'm used to from cast recordings but it didn't spoil the film at all.

My main problems with it were some of the cuts...like Kiss Me, and also the excessive gore, which made the film feel a bit tacky.

I really want to see it again soon though.

I saw it today too!
It came to my local theatre yesterday
There were only 7 people in the theatre, not counting me and my 4 friends.
Can you believe it??

But, it somehow managed to gross 49 million $ already!!
I loved it too! It was really amazing.

Granted, quite a bit was changed from the musical, but it was mostly
for aesthetic purposes...and film and theatre are two vastly different
mediums...

The gore was incredible, in terms of the way it looked. Like, the
color palette was mostly black and white, so, when the blood flew out,
it was very red and looked awesome!

My biggest annoyance was some of the song changes. I liked how the
romance between Anthony and Johanna was toned down a bit, it kept more
room for Sweeney and Nellie to romanticize. However, some of the songs
I LOVE were cut: Parlor Songs I and II, Ah Miss, Kiss Me, and a lot of
God That's Good.

In God, That's Good, I kept wanting the audience to cry out "God,
that's good!"...hence the song name. However, the song was VERY short
compared to the stage version... Like, Sweeney constructed the chair
himself, instead of getting it bought that way and making "a few minor
adjustments," so, all of the Lovett/Todd dialogue of the song was gone.

A lot By The Sea was also cut... Odd, but, not that big of a deal.

I think the songs that were cut (mostly the million Ballad of
Sweeney Todd reprises) were right to be omitted... And I loved how the
background music is from the Ballads, though.

The costumes, make-up, sets, everything were great. And the voices!
I thought that they would all be horrendous, but, boy was I wrong! The
whole cast was incredible. I especially love the Tim Burton touches,
like the warped architecture and insane costumes. It was all
incredible, and I can't wait to see it again or get the DVD when it
comes out!

And the ending...the very tragic ending...nearly left me in tears.

It was so sad... But, as Sophia told me, the ending was a bit different from the stage show. A better different!

Great film. If you haven't seen it, DO IT.

Told you all it was worth the admisstion prices. Though I still miss the ballad of sweeney todd.Thats all I really have to complain about the movie with the exception of that some of the blood looks a bit fake using CG at the end but other then that. All i have to say "God thats good!"

I agree. I think the Ballads work well on stage but would have seemed silly on film.

I found the ending...weird. I don't know if I liked it or not. It was very abrupt. But I think it worked.

[color=red]ya I have to agree. That's why it's irony which the play is full of.Toby was supposed to be the savior and yet he gets dragged down into the madness that surrounded him. That fit the play as well as the movie much better then Toby just silting Sweeney's neck and running away. No one not even innocence can go into the darkness and be unaffected no one.Just look at Erik.

Loved the movie. It was so phantomish at times Smile

I'm dead serious when I say I want Tim Burton to direct the next POTO movie; he's a genious!

Oh I know, that would be awesome!
He should have directed ALW's!
I can SO imagine Johnny Depp and Helene Bonham-Carter as Erik and Christine. They worked well in Corpse Bride, which is VERY similar to POTO. It would give the movie the needed darkness! Very Happy

And he should direct the upcoming Jekyll and Hyde musical film.

Is there going to be one of those? That'd be interesting!

I think Burton could also pull off a Kay verison, not so much Leroux I don't think.
